People over stuff
People over stuff
The more things I have, the happier I will be. This statement is so wrong. No matter how many things you have, you still need people around you to make you happy. No amount of things can surmount the joy that relationships give a person.
So instead of thinking, “what things can I buy to make me happier?” instead ask, “what relationships can I form to bring more joy into my life?” Surround yourself with people who make you happy. Work to deepen the existing relationships you have. Invest in the people around you.
An argument may arise that you can augment a relationship with stuff. I do somewhat agree with this. I believe it is possible to create more happiness in certain instances with things, but it is not the same lasting joy that a good relationship creates. For example, if you buy something that allows you to partake in a specific, enjoyable activity with someone, then that item is augmenting your happiness. But as I said before, don’t rely on that thing for lasting happiness.
As you live day to day, focus on the people around you. Focus on learning more about them and look at what you can do to give them joy. Gratitude is the main driver for joy in ourselves, so thank them. Let them know you care for them. The more we care, the more everyone cares. The environment goes from apathetic, to jubilant and engaged. So instead of buying more stuff, invest in the people around you.
