Delay Gratification
Delay Gratification
As humans, we do things that give us a positive reaction upon our actions. This is called instant gratification. We like to see a positive result instantly after doing something good. We want to see 6-pack abs after 30 minutes on the treadmill. We want to buy a new car after getting one paycheck. But as we all know, this isn’t sustainable. That’s where delayed gratification comes in.
People who are able to prolong the feeling of satisfaction usually find a bigger reward at the end. Consistently showing up to the gym day after day even when you don’t want to and eating healthy most of the time will give you 6-pack abs. Consistently saving a portion of your paycheck that will go toward a new car will allow you to afford the car of your dreams. It is all about consistency, time, and repetitions.
Constructive habits that are consistent will show more progress over time than spurts of good habits and mounds of bad ones. That dream life that you hope to have cannot be had tomorrow, but it can be had someday. You must figure out what you want and be consistent about doing the things that will get you there.
Time is the only resource that money can buy. We trade our time for money and our money for time. The more time we put into something, the more time we will get out. Put your time into working out, and you will have more time at the end of your life. Put more time into learning about money management, the more time you will have to enjoy not working. The time you put in will determine how much time you will get out.
Practice makes perfect: a cliché we have all heard. But what does it mean? Is there really a way to be perfect? I don’t think perfect is what practice makes, but I do think it makes better. The more repetitions you practice, the better you will get. Repetitions take time but they will get you to where you want to be. One day all of the repetitions will pay off and you will be better than you were when you started.
It takes time to get what you want. The sooner you realize that you have to be consistent, put in the time, and practice often, the sooner you will reach your dreams. Start today. Avoid doing things that satisfy you now, but will hinder your future. Establish habits today that will make you better tomorrow.
