Comparison
Comparison
The best way of feeling like a failure is comparing yourself to others. It is nearly impossible for us to not feel envy. It is wired into our brains. Envy is good when it motivates, but it is detrimental when it demotivates. Use comparison as a tool to make you better rather than an ambition dampener.
We have all heard the phrases “only compare you to you” and “don’t compare yourself to others.” Both are valid adages but is it even possible to only compare you to you? I’d say not. What is possible is comparing yourself to yourself when you look at progress and comparing yourself to others when searching for motivation.
Other people are the driving force in most actions you take. Think of how little things you would do if you were the only person with an opinion. Our decisions are largely based on the interests and opinions of the people we spend the most time with. So why not use others as your comparison? When you see people you want to be like, you should ask yourself how you can get there. Use their example as the force that drives you.
The times when looking to others is detrimental is when it makes you overlook how much you have accomplished. It is extremely easy to beat yourself up over what you have done in comparison to others in a certain facet. But what have you done in other facets that they haven’t? This is the very question that we seldom remind ourselves of. First, reflect on what you have done to grow yourself in each facet, then use others to make goals on where you want to go.
Having a guideline for where you want to go is beneficial. This allows you to have an example and be able to track your progress as you go. Make others your tutorial. Use the tutorial and grow from it, but don’t follow just the tutorial. Once you have learned the process and actions you wish to take, track your personal growth. The best gauge of your progress comes from within.
~Thank you for reading. My goal is to help teach others ways to better themselves while doing the same for myself. This is The Exploration.~
