Expectations

“To whom much is given, much is expected.”

At a young age, you quickly recognize who is better at what. For me, it was sports. You could easily see who stood out on their playing field. Those kids were given an unearned respect from all those who looked up to them. When it was time to shine, you expected them to step up. God gave them a natural talent, so naturally, a lot was expected of them.

But what happened when those kids didn’t live up to what was expected of them. They were disappointments.

“That kid could’ve gone so far.”

“What a waste of potential.”

“If only they had applied themself.”

These phrases are tossed around every single day. Other people form ideas in their heads about what you should turn into, and if you don’t, you have failed in their minds.

I have seen people live their entire lives based on other people’s expectations. But why? Do their expectations of you even matter?

You spend so much of your time doing things other people want of you, and never quite figure out what you want of you. If you dedicated as much time doing what you wanted to do as what others want you to do, I guarantee you would be 10 times happier.

Some people find it. They find their flow state. They find their passion. But others get stuck in living a life based on somebody’s expectations for them. Or, they discover what makes them tick, then they see the string that is controlling them and think that there is no way to cut it.

Quit being a puppet.

Cut the string.

Break the mold.

At some point, you must realize that the only expectations that matter are your own. You have to create expectations for yourself.

Live up to your expectations.
